What kind of immediate help is available?

Hotlines are crucial for immediate emotional support and guidance, offering encouragement to take the first step towards leaving. Shelters provide a safe haven for those who need a secure place to go after leaving an abusive environment.

Where can I find emotional support and counseling?

Most counties have several free counseling services available for survivors of abuse, the National Domestic Abuse Hotline can connect you to ones in your area as can a victim advocate- To get a victim advocate, contact your local police department’s Crime Victim Liaison, the county district attorney’s office, or specialized organizations like family violence/rape crisis centers, which offer free, confidential support and guidance through legal processes.

How can I prepare to leave safely?

Planning for a safe departure is critical, the NDAH can help create a safety plan and connect you to resources needed for your success.

What if I don't have financial resources to leave?

Financial independence is often a barrier. Many organizations offer financial assistance, job placement support, and legal aid to help you establish stability. Many counties across the country have programs to help with this, to find one in your area, reach out to NDAH or your victim advocate.

I feel like I'm not strong enough to leave. Is that normal?

Absolutely. Abusers often manipulate you into believing you're not capable or worthy. But that's a lie. You are enough, and you deserve a life free from abuse. This page is a testament to your inherent strength, and we're here to help you rediscover it.

I'm scared of what comes next. What should I do?

It's natural to feel scared about the unknown. However, staying in an abusive situation is often more dangerous. Resources here can help you plan for a safe departure, connect you with legal aid, and guide you toward housing and employment assistance, helping you build a stable future.

What if I have children? How can I protect them?

Protecting your children is a top priority. Resources are available for creating safety plans that include children, legal support for custody matters, and counseling for both you and your children to navigate this transition safely; NDAH, victim advocates and county resources all can help with this.

How do I know if the resources listed are safe and confidential?

Many hotlines and shelters operate with strict confidentiality policies. Always feel free to ask about their privacy practices when you reach out.

Reclaim your life. You are enough.
